When one door closes, another door...
I had built my identity around “student-athlete” for as long as I could remember. Hockey was who I was and what I did. So when my athletic career ended after my first year at Middlebury College, I found myself left alone to pick up the pieces. Little did I know at the time that when the door to my hockey career closed, another door that was full of life, health, happiness, and connection had opened. Yet as the old saying goes, I was too busy looking at the closed door to notice this new, wide-open opportunity.
I began to question my power...
I spent the majority of the next 5 years teetering on the brink of anxiety and depression-- feeling stuck and longing for purpose. I was operating on extremes, with the “work hard, play hard” mentality becoming my mantra. On the outside, life was sweet. On the inside, I was questioning everything, struggling with digestive issues, and for the life of me couldn’t get rid of the brain fog that had accumulated. There’s gotta be a better way to live, I thought.
Slow and steady...
There was no “AHA” moment that kickstarted my journey with health and wellness. Rather, it was a series of finally trusting my intuition and inching my way towards that opened door that led me to pursue a Graduate degree in Integrative Health, a whole-body approach to health and healthcare.
Why wait for the diagnosis?
My schooling in Integrative Health from the California Institute of Integral Studies taught me how close I was to becoming a part of the growing population of young adults currently living with chronic disease. It taught me that without a foundation of self-compassion, sustainable change isn’t possible. And most importantly, it taught me that a truly holistic, personalized approach to health is the only way we can achieve a balanced life.
As an integrative wellness coach with certifications in personal training (NASM), guided imagery meditation (CIIS), and applied positive psychology (CAPP), I empower my clients to close the door to their old way of living.
